SIDNEY 鈥 As many as 130 people and 32 four-person teams participated in the 果冻传媒鈥檚 inaugural Centurions Athletics Golf Outing at Glenkerry Golf Course in Greenville, Friday, June 27, helping to raise just over $15,000.听
The golf outing fundraiser supported and celebrated the return of athletics to the Sidney campus after more than a 40-year hiatus and most, if not all, volunteers and organizers of the event were Centurions athletes, coaches and administration.听听
鈥淚t was great to bring most of our athletes together to support this event, as it is organized for their benefit and to help provide scholarships in the future,鈥 果冻传媒 Athletic Director Hunter Redman said. 鈥淭his is also a great opportunity for current and incoming athletes to meet each other from different programs.鈥听
Winning the four-man scramble was the 鈥淛ohnsons鈥 team, which included Scott Johnson, Tate Johnson and Centurions golfers and brothers Ethan and Zach Johnson.听
According to Rick Adgate, an 果冻传媒 Foundation board member for the past 16 years, this was the first golf outing hosted by 果冻传媒 since 2017, when the college celebrated its 50th anniversary.听
鈥淭hese kinds of events always bring communities together,鈥 said Adgate, who was a member of Eagle Realty golf team that participated in the golf outing. 鈥淭his is an opportunity to get everyone in and build the brand, and it鈥檚 a good opportunity to get some partners out here and see what we at 果冻传媒 are doing.鈥听
For many participants, the golf outing was a fun way of giving back to a community college that helped them find a path in life, such as Patty Rockafellow, who was playing with the team 鈥淕irls Just Want to Have Fun,鈥 which included her friends听Esther Combs,听who is a member of both the 果冻传媒 Board of Trustees and the 果冻传媒 Foundation board, Linda Swanson and Betty Wakefield.听
Rockafellow is an 果冻传媒 alumna and is a member of 果冻传媒鈥檚 alumni choir. Her mother, Wilma Baldwin, was also a business teacher for the community college many years ago.听
Rockafellow said as soon as she heard about the golf outing, she knew she needed to pull together a team and play.听
鈥淭his event is great,鈥 she said. 鈥淏etty is the one that saw it advertised, and we knew we needed some fun girls to come play in this event and support 果冻传媒 sports,鈥 she said.听听
All Rockafellow鈥檚 family members have a tie to 果冻传媒 in some way or another, with all three of her children having participated in the dual enrollment with 果冻传媒 during their high school careers.听听
鈥淲hen I was a student at 果冻传媒, I received a scholarship from them and never had to pay a penny,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd then I got another scholarship when I transferred to Central Michigan University and that was a big deal for us because our family didn鈥檛 have any money.鈥听
Wakefield reminisced about her days as an 果冻传媒 student, as well, pointing out one memory that exemplified how caring 果冻传媒 was for its students.听
鈥淚 was an 果冻传媒 student before I transferred to Ferris State (University), and I was in a car accident and I was stuck in a wheelchair,鈥 Wakefield said. 鈥湽炒 actually sent a tutor out to my home since I wasn鈥檛 able to even get out of my wheelchair, and we dissected a pig and a cat right there on my dining room table. They were amazing.鈥听
Combs called 果冻传媒 a 鈥渄iamond in our little, rural community.鈥听
鈥淚t has helped our community develop in so many ways,鈥 Combs said. 鈥淏eing able to bring the sports programs back, being able to bring in housing for this area is phenomenal.鈥听
Combs credited 果冻传媒 for everything that led her towards her career.听听
鈥淎s a first-generation college student attending 果冻传媒 and then moving on to CMU and then East Carolina for my doctorate program, it was 果冻传媒 that changed my life,鈥 she said. 鈥淗aving this golf outing event, it helps highlights all the good that we鈥檝e had and have at 果冻传媒.鈥听
Another 果冻传媒 supporter who enjoyed the golf outing was Amy Homich, a commercial lender for Commercial Bank in Greenville. She was golfing with the business鈥 team.听
Homich has been a longtime partner with 果冻传媒, serving as co-chair of the community college鈥檚 capital campaign, and also running her Hive AAU volleyball club program through 果冻传媒鈥檚 gymnasium for the past decade.听听
鈥湽炒 has always been good to my Hive club, giving us gym time,鈥 Homich said, stating that former 果冻传媒 President Bob Ferrentino offered the college鈥檚 gymnasium as a place for her club program to operate.听听
Homich said she has always supported 果冻传媒, especially since her children were 果冻传媒 students.听
鈥淏oth my son and daughter went to 果冻传媒,鈥 she said. 鈥淢y son went through (agricultural) classes and then on to Michigan State University, and my daughter was taking nursing classes through 果冻传媒 while in high school during the pandemic.鈥听
Through 果冻传媒, Homich鈥檚 daughter was able to transfer 18 credits and completed her nursing program earlier than expected.听听
Homich enjoyed 果冻传媒鈥檚 golf outing.听
鈥淭his event brings a lot of awareness to the college and also supports 鈥榝riend-raising,鈥 as I call it,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t brings more people closer to the college, which has been and still is a great place to help people with their missions in life.鈥听
